Aluminium glazing for Rochdale’s new innovation centre
The Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing Centre (SMMC) at Kingsway Business Park in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, brings together space for advanced materials research and manufacturing. The 30,000 sq ft building is the first major physical development within the Atom Valley Innovation District, connecting businesses with researchers and specialist facilities.
With the base build now complete, the centre is moving towards specialist fit-out. Its combination of glazed entrance areas and long window bands gives the building a clear identity within the business park.
A glazed entrance with a distinctive identity
Dark aluminium curtain walling wraps the two-storey entrance, with broad glass panels carrying a circuit-inspired pattern. The regular framing grid follows the change in direction at the corner, creating a continuous glazed frontage around the main arrival space.
Window bands set into contrasting cladding
Along the adjoining elevation, long runs of aluminium windows sit within warm-toned cladding. Fixed glazing and opening sections follow a consistent line across the upper floor, while larger glazed screens continue at ground level. Together, the window bands and entrance glazing give the research and manufacturing building a coordinated appearance.
